First off - get some adjustable dumbbells. They are well worth the investment.

These PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells are the only adjustable dumbbells I have used or owned, and I love them.

They are incredibly easy to use and adjust - it only takes a couple seconds per dumbbell. Even when my arms are dead tired, I can still guide them back into place easily and change the weight - something that might not work quite so well on other dumbbells.

The size of the dumbbells is decent. They are bigger than standard dumbbells, but they haven't hindered any of my exercises. I do many different exercises and so far these haven't caused any issues for any of them. I think it might become more of an issue with a set that goes higher than 45 as the dumbbell would get even longer as more weight is added based on the design.

The only problem I have had with these is a very slight one - sometimes the weights below what is selected stick. That is, you may set it to 15lbs, but the next weight below it may be "stuck" to it on one side or the other for some reason when you go to lift it out - you just have to wiggle it a bit and/or hold down the weight that isn't supposed to be coming up as you lift the dumbbell initially. This doesn't happen often, and it is such a slight issue that it is hardly worth mentioning.

I believe PowerBlock also recently (at the time of this review) came out with some that are very similar to this although slightly curved on the edges. I think those might look a little better cosmetically, as these are just square blocks. Nevertheless, these work perfectly and still do not look too bad either.

Overall, get some adjustable weights. This is a great set, but if you choose not to get this set, at least get some set (with good reviews, of course) - adjustable dumbbells are just so much easier and more affordable - especially if you don't have a huge exercise room where you can line all the weights up (if this is the case, and you have lots of money, perhaps just get standard weights to avoid the slight time it takes to adjust them)

The Power Block Classic 45 is a must have if you are doing the P90X Extreme Home Workout. Yes like with anything man made you will need to be careful but all the safety information is covered in the handout that comes with the blocks, I am amazed at people complaining about the pins and if it's not perfect this and that could happen, all was covered in the handout that came with the blocks, I was using a pair of end screw on dumb bells and you talk about a pain. Pause the DVD, unscrew the ends, and remove the weight, screw back on the ends, un-pause the DVD. So after that routine the power blocks are a gift from heaven, I work out on carpet and found it easy to roll the blocks on their side to change the weight, the pins go right in and it gives me a moment to do a little check, and I do this without pausing the DVD.
The power blocks appear to be a little pricey, especially if you're on a budget. It's mainly because you're paying for all the weight upfront, unlike with dumb bells where you buy a set and when you need more resistance you go out and buy other set, and keep repeating this process until you have spent double of what the power blocks cost, the main thing here is it wasn't all at one time, the buying was done over months even years.
I really can't tell you how much I enjoy doing P90X now with my Power Blocks. And in the end if you're looking at the power blocks you have made a decision to get in shape and you can't put a price on your health. Only a doctor can do that and trust me it gets expensive.

I've had these weights for just over 2 weeks and they're nothing short of fantastic. Very easy to switch from 5 to 45 pounds to optimize a workout. I've already lost two inches off my waist thanks to these and a new diet. I would definitely recommend these

Pro- Good weight set, saves a great deal of space, fairly comfortable to use.
Cons- Difficult to adjust if not on stand

These dumbbells are excellent! I used the Bowflex SelectTech adjustable dumbbells and found that they are very bulky (which may limit some exercises) and rattle in your hands. The Bowflex dumbbells also need to be lined up just right when setting them down on the stand, which can be a minor nuisance. The PowerBlocks adjust easier and quicker than their Bowflex counterparts. Quality adjustable dumbbells like these may look expensive at first, but they are built very well and will last many many years. I use these for my P90X workouts, and in a typical hour workout, I save myself at least 10 minutes using these dumbbells over my old custom-weight dumbbells with a fraction of the footprint. You won't be disappointed with PowerBlocks!

You should always workout with free weights, as they allow you to use the natural free-range of motion, stabilizer muscles, and proper posture.

There is absolutely no reason you should work out on machines unless you are a complete beginner or injured. Machines are great for safety, but not much else.

If you are going to invest in a dumbbell set, get the ones that go to 50 pounds at the minimum. Everything else is just a waste. You will outgrow your old weights as you constantly and consistently work out.

If dumbbell sets are too expensive for you, then consider joining a gym for $20 a month or getting 3 dumbbell weights (10 pounds, 25 pounds, and 50 pounds).

There is no need to even invest in a dumbbell set until your bodyweight exercises and stability exercises become too easy (over 100 push-ups, 20 pull-ups, and 6 minute miles). Until then, use your body weight! It's cheaper, faster, and easier.

If you don't feel the burn after 10 repetitions, you are doing the exercise wrong. In all exercises, it is the eccentric portion of the exercise that builds muscle. Do the exercise in a smooth, controlled fashion with a 3 concentric and 6 eccentric count. Squeeze at the peak of the motion to get that extra pump.

As in all exercises, make sure to keep your wrists straight and check your posture with these seven vital points: feet hips-width apart and pointed straight ahead; knees slightly bent; pelvis at perfect middle, as if you are sitting at a bar stool; stomach tight, but not flexed; chest straight and aligned on top of ribs; shoulders parallel to ribs; and neck straight on top of body

I would highly recommend Powerblocks to anyone who is looking for a compact, convenient, and sturdy adjustable dumbbell set. They are less expensive than Bowflex products, and they have less fine parts that could be damaged. My only concern with the Powerblocks was the setup of having your hands inside the weight chamber. However, that concern has been completely assuaged. They are comfortable and easily used with a range of exercises.

Wanted dumbbells for home use, but not a separate pair for every 5-pound increment (would require more space, have to build a rack for them, out of place in multi-purpose room, etc.). The PowerBlocks give me 5 to 45 lbs. per dumbbell, change easily in seconds, have even weight distribution with padding around wrists, stay securely attached, and are easily stored when not in use. No complaints.

Customer Buzz
The PowerBlock dumbbell set is great for someone like me who lives in an apartment and has limited space. I get a full range of motion and the pins stay in place very securely so I never worry about having the weights above my head. Sometimes the weights get stuck when lowering them into the unused plates, but if you keep it straight when you lower it there is no problem. I think the carpet allows them to move so I may get the tray or get some kind of hard surface to keep them from tilting. Otherwise a great product that performs perfectly!
