I also bought these for use with the ChaLean Extreme program, by Beachbody, which requires a lot of weight changes througout the workout. They work sufficiently for lifting and for basic exercises. The quick change option is really nice and there is a diverse amount of weights. I wouldn't call this the highest quality product though. They seem flimsy for being close to $200. I'm always a little afraid that the pin is going to slip out and cause an injury.

Customer Buzz
I really like the SportsBlock dumbbells. They are easy to switch from 3 - 24 lbs. I really like that they take up so little storage room. I have been using them with the Jorge Cruze 12 second workout DVD and they work great.

Customer Buzz
I just started the Chalean Extreme workout program and this set of dumbbells is perfect for the routines!! The weights are compact and easy to use. And the best part is they take up very little room in your home.

Customer Buzz
I was hesitant to drop almost $200 on this set of weights without seeing it in a store and knowing it was non-returnable.
However, I have only used it a few times and I have been very pleased. I am motivated to work out more. They are very compact to store and very comfortable to use. I think this product is very well designed.
I wish I would have found this 10 years ago. It would have saved me from lugging all these hand weights from apartment to apartment when I moved around a lot when I was younger! Such a great alternative to keeping a whole set of different weights.

Customer Buzz
If you are in the market for these types of "dumbells" ( ones that you can quickly change weight on ) and are terrified of the really expensive alternatives, don't look any further. These work exactly as advertised. As long as 24 lbs on each hand is heavy enough for you, you'll be very happy. The square shape makes them easy to store and if you secure them properly, they are very safe and easy to use. They are shaped well enough that you can even use both hands on one block for those exercises that require it.

The "change" system is definitely not as fancy as the pricier competition - but it works.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3E3VG28MZH6FS The power block dumbbells is my first adjustable dumbbell set i have bought. I love the size of it as i can store it just about anywhere and yet be able to lift weight anywhere from 6-24 pounds. The only problem with it as others have mentioned is that you might mess up getting the pin in straight to adjust the weights but it is easy to figure out when u have messed it up. Another annoying thing about the dumbbells set is while ur working out the plate hit each other and u hear an annoying clunking sound

Customer Buzz
These weights are easy to use and are great for people with small hands. Great for adding weights to lunges, squats, deadlifts, chest, and shoulder exercises. I am a petite woman and I used them with my younger brothers as well. I am considering the bigger ones for my husband. He still gets good use out of these.

Customer Buzz
This is the perfect dumbbell set for home use . . . compact, flexible, easy to use.

Customer Buzz
I've had these for a while now, and for the most part, I like them. They are a reasonable compromise between individual weight dumbbells and other, more expensive, adjustable weights. It's easy to select the desired weight and with a maximum of 24 pounds per dumbell, you can get a good amount of resistance for most common dumbbell exercise. The minor complaints I have are that they could have a bit more room between the rods that connect the weight discs, as my knuckles can sometime rub against them unless I hold it in just a certain way, and also it's not always easy to get the weight selector "thingie" in the right place. Other than that, a far less expensive option than Bowflex.

Customer Buzz
I bought these dumbbells as a secondary set to the 5-50 lb. PowerBlocks I bought only a few weeks before. I liked the first product so much that I bought the lighter set so my husband and I can lift together.

These are extremely easy to use and surprisingly compact. I went to the fitness store and looked at these and the Selecttechs side by side and was astonished by the length of the Selecttechs. In my opinion, that product would not work for women due to how long the bar is to accommodate all the weights.

Though this system is a little oddly shaped (blocky) it is much more compact and thus easier to manipulate. True, it takes a little time to find a comfortable grip for a few exercises (such as things behind the head) but once you know what works for you the system makes lifting easy.

PowerBlock Classic Adjustable 5 to 45-Pounds per Dumbbell Set

Product Description

Customer Buzz
First off - get some adjustable dumbbells. They are well worth the investment.

These PowerBlock adjustable dumbbells are the only adjustable dumbbells I have used or owned, and I love them.

They are incredibly easy to use and adjust - it only takes a couple seconds per dumbbell. Even when my arms are dead tired, I can still guide them back into place easily and change the weight - something that might not work quite so well on other dumbbells.

The size of the dumbbells is decent. They are bigger than standard dumbbells, but they haven't hindered any of my exercises. I do many different exercises and so far these haven't caused any issues for any of them. I think it might become more of an issue with a set that goes higher than 45 as the dumbbell would get even longer as more weight is added based on the design.

The only problem I have had with these is a very slight one - sometimes the weights below what is selected stick. That is, you may set it to 15lbs, but the next weight below it may be "stuck" to it on one side or the other for some reason when you go to lift it out - you just have to wiggle it a bit and/or hold down the weight that isn't supposed to be coming up as you lift the dumbbell initially. This doesn't happen often, and it is such a slight issue that it is hardly worth mentioning.

I believe PowerBlock also recently (at the time of this review) came out with some that are very similar to this although slightly curved on the edges. I think those might look a little better cosmetically, as these are just square blocks. Nevertheless, these work perfectly and still do not look too bad either.

Overall, get some adjustable weights. This is a great set, but if you choose not to get this set, at least get some set (with good reviews, of course) - adjustable dumbbells are just so much easier and more affordable - especially if you don't have a huge exercise room where you can line all the weights up (if this is the case, and you have lots of money, perhaps just get standard weights to avoid the slight time it takes to adjust them)

Customer Buzz
The Power Block Classic 45 is a must have if you are doing the P90X Extreme Home Workout. Yes like with anything man made you will need to be careful but all the safety information is covered in the handout that comes with the blocks, I am amazed at people complaining about the pins and if it's not perfect this and that could happen, all was covered in the handout that came with the blocks, I was using a pair of end screw on dumb bells and you talk about a pain. Pause the DVD, unscrew the ends, and remove the weight, screw back on the ends, un-pause the DVD. So after that routine the power blocks are a gift from heaven, I work out on carpet and found it easy to roll the blocks on their side to change the weight, the pins go right in and it gives me a moment to do a little check, and I do this without pausing the DVD.
The power blocks appear to be a little pricey, especially if you're on a budget. It's mainly because you're paying for all the weight upfront, unlike with dumb bells where you buy a set and when you need more resistance you go out and buy other set, and keep repeating this process until you have spent double of what the power blocks cost, the main thing here is it wasn't all at one time, the buying was done over months even years.
I really can't tell you how much I enjoy doing P90X now with my Power Blocks. And in the end if you're looking at the power blocks you have made a decision to get in shape and you can't put a price on your health. Only a doctor can do that and trust me it gets expensive.

I've had these weights for just over 2 weeks and they're nothing short of fantastic. Very easy to switch from 5 to 45 pounds to optimize a workout. I've already lost two inches off my waist thanks to these and a new diet. I would definitely recommend these

Customer Buzz
Pro- Good weight set, saves a great deal of space, fairly comfortable to use.
Cons- Difficult to adjust if not on stand

Customer Buzz
These dumbbells are excellent! I used the Bowflex SelectTech adjustable dumbbells and found that they are very bulky (which may limit some exercises) and rattle in your hands. The Bowflex dumbbells also need to be lined up just right when setting them down on the stand, which can be a minor nuisance. The PowerBlocks adjust easier and quicker than their Bowflex counterparts. Quality adjustable dumbbells like these may look expensive at first, but they are built very well and will last many many years. I use these for my P90X workouts, and in a typical hour workout, I save myself at least 10 minutes using these dumbbells over my old custom-weight dumbbells with a fraction of the footprint. You won't be disappointed with PowerBlocks!

Customer Buzz
I have been using the powerblock system for 12 years.......I'm a 63 year Old Special Forces Vietnam Vet.......I also hold a personal training certification from ACE........I have been trainng and body building for over 40 years.........And I can tell you that the powerblock system
is the finest dumbell system i have ever used......I use mine 3-4 times a week...I get a excellent workout, that helps me stay very fit.........And i must tell you i like the feel of the product as well as the sturdiness....of the blocks...of course you have to be careful as you would with any heavy weight set... just use common sense and keep training....I would not use another brand
and I reccomend them highly

Customer Buzz
You should always workout with free weights, as they allow you to use the natural free-range of motion, stabilizer muscles, and proper posture.

There is absolutely no reason you should work out on machines unless you are a complete beginner or injured. Machines are great for safety, but not much else.

If you are going to invest in a dumbbell set, get the ones that go to 50 pounds at the minimum. Everything else is just a waste. You will outgrow your old weights as you constantly and consistently work out.

If dumbbell sets are too expensive for you, then consider joining a gym for $20 a month or getting 3 dumbbell weights (10 pounds, 25 pounds, and 50 pounds).

There is no need to even invest in a dumbbell set until your bodyweight exercises and stability exercises become too easy (over 100 push-ups, 20 pull-ups, and 6 minute miles). Until then, use your body weight! It's cheaper, faster, and easier.

If you don't feel the burn after 10 repetitions, you are doing the exercise wrong. In all exercises, it is the eccentric portion of the exercise that builds muscle. Do the exercise in a smooth, controlled fashion with a 3 concentric and 6 eccentric count. Squeeze at the peak of the motion to get that extra pump.

As in all exercises, make sure to keep your wrists straight and check your posture with these seven vital points: feet hips-width apart and pointed straight ahead; knees slightly bent; pelvis at perfect middle, as if you are sitting at a bar stool; stomach tight, but not flexed; chest straight and aligned on top of ribs; shoulders parallel to ribs; and neck straight on top of body

Customer Buzz
I would highly recommend Powerblocks to anyone who is looking for a compact, convenient, and sturdy adjustable dumbbell set. They are less expensive than Bowflex products, and they have less fine parts that could be damaged. My only concern with the Powerblocks was the setup of having your hands inside the weight chamber. However, that concern has been completely assuaged. They are comfortable and easily used with a range of exercises.

Customer Buzz
Wanted dumbbells for home use, but not a separate pair for every 5-pound increment (would require more space, have to build a rack for them, out of place in multi-purpose room, etc.). The PowerBlocks give me 5 to 45 lbs. per dumbbell, change easily in seconds, have even weight distribution with padding around wrists, stay securely attached, and are easily stored when not in use. No complaints.

Customer Buzz
The PowerBlock dumbbell set is great for someone like me who lives in an apartment and has limited space. I get a full range of motion and the pins stay in place very securely so I never worry about having the weights above my head. Sometimes the weights get stuck when lowering them into the unused plates, but if you keep it straight when you lower it there is no problem. I think the carpet allows them to move so I may get the tray or get some kind of hard surface to keep them from tilting. Otherwise a great product that performs perfectly!

If you are looking to get adjustable dumbbells, these are the ones to buy. They are solid and will last a long, long time. I would buy these over the bowflex or any other adjustable dumbbells. I have the set that goes up to 90lbs. and they are great and only take up a little space. I would recommend going to a place that sells these and take a look before your buy. I was looking to have a store close by that sells these and I was skeptical at first but when I played around with these dumbbells, I found out just how "solid" these things are. You can get a total body workout with just these and a good weight bench. Some things you just need to try out before you purchase and I tried these out and was very impressed. Great design and great product. It was funny because after I went to the fitness store to look at these, I went to the local bookstore and was skimming through the latest Sports Illustrated magazine and there was an article about Lance Armstrong's comeback and several photos of him working out. One of the photos shows Lance using these PowerBlock dumbbells. After that I was sold! It must of been a sign. Ha! Well good luck and I think you will really like these and may be the last dumbbells you ever buy. Good luck!

Customer Buzz
I started the P90X workout a few weeks ago and began using the rubber resistance bands. However, when I switched to this set of weights the workout became much more challenging. I highly recommend these over the bands if possible. Changing weights is a snap so you can easily keep up with the video. The product feels solid and high quality. Yes, there is a price premium for the Powerblocks but they are much quicker than changing plate weights and they take up much less room than a set of dumbbells. Highly recommended.

No offense to Amazon, but due to shipping costs, try to buy them locally if you can. I paid $269 + tax for the Sport 5.0 set which covers 5-50 pounds in 5 pound increments. Unless you are a bodybuilder, this weight will cover all the exercises in P90X. And the Sport series can be upgraded to 65 pounds if you really must have it.

Customer Buzz
These are great i bought the 5 to 45 pound set and recently have sold those and bought the 5 to 90. I might suggest getting a set you can add onto it will save you money in the long run. I have also in the past owned the Boxflex dumbbells those went to 52 pounds I did not like how long they were. The only problem I have had with the powerblock dumbbells is doing wrist curls the 2 bars on the top prevent some movement there. Otherwise these are great and not too outrageous on pricing.

Customer Buzz
I am giving the product a 3. I'm disappointed in them. They are bulky, which is probably typical for this type of weight. The pins snag on my shorts when doing curls next to my body. You can not hold them with two hands so I can't do one of my favorite lifts with them (over the head drop weights to back of neck and up). I put them on a cushioned chair instead of buying the stand and it is hard to change the weights on anything even a little soft. You can't move a weight from the left hand to right hand without sitting it down first. Just little things that I didn't think of. They are nonreturnable.

I bought the PowerBlock because I did not want to have a bunch of dumbells sitting around my house. I could not be more pleased. The PowerBlocks look unusual but I did not notice any difference between the PowerBlock or a set of regular dumbells. The adjustable pins slow you down a little bit if you're doing some circuit training but that is the only gripe that I have. Overall, an excellent product at a cheaper price than the competition.

Customer Buzz
Powerblock Personal / Plus

Pros:
Solid, well constructed, quick weight change design.
Selector pin never loosens or requires mid work out tightening like other adjustables.
Although plates shift slightly when in motion I've never worried about the system failing.
10 Year warranty, made in the USA.
Truly portable with no need for a cradle or stand.
Despite other users complaints the Personal Plus handle upgrade works fine for me. The welded plates are so thin you would have to have monster hands for this to be an issue.
If you've ever looked at these on auctions sites or classifieds, they really hold their value.

Cons:
Plates do make a clanging noise when in motion.
Changing plates when you are really fatigued can be a challenge if you don't get the selector pin exactly straight.
Don't expect a fancy work out DVD or exercise chart, you just get a black and white instruction manual. I suggest the laminated posters.
Putting your hand into a rectangular box does take some getting used to.

Customer Buzz
These powerblocks work as advertised. I preferred the bowflex adjustable dumbells due to the way their adjustment mechanisms work, but they were considerably more expensive and require the use of a base. These powerblocks work well overal and seem to be very well constructed. The magnetic pin mechanism works well, although sometimes it seems awkward inserting them, especially when the insert location is near the bottom of the blocks. Once the pins are inserted, the blocks are very reliable and stable. I've never experienced dropped or partially connected weights, which is something that can occur on the similarly priced weider adjustable dumbells.

Customer Buzz
We bought these because my partner and I have very different strength levels and needs. We have individual weights all around the house and it was getting crazy. Now we just have the powerblocks and they work well for this purpose. They are a bit unwieldy to change the weight on (the Bowflex ones seemed better on this) and the square shape takes some getting used to, but in general we are highly satisfied with the purchase. We didn't get the stand, but we would highly recommend it.

Customer Buzz
I researched ways to have some home workout equipment that would be small enough to fit in my studio apartment while also providing the maximum benefit for the price.

These fit the bill perfectly. Adjusting the weight amount is seriously a 5 second process. It could not be easier.

I've heard good things about the Ironmaster dumbbells, but those are much more expensive than the Blocks. I highly recommend getting the stand for these, as it makes them more usable.

If you are in the market for these types of "dumbells" ( ones that you can quickly change weight on ) and are terrified of the really expensive alternatives, don't look any further. These work exactly as advertised. As long as 24 lbs on each hand is heavy enough for you, you'll be very happy. I bought the set, because my trainer has the elite set, which I liked. I received the set damaged - plastic was broken and plates were off on one of the blocks. Fortunately, Amazon took the set back; however, I did try the block that was not damaged, and it did not feel as sturdy as the elite set. I was surprised especially with all its great reviews. I ended up reordering the 45 lbs set instead.

Customer Buzz
As a graduate student living in an apartment, I don't have a lot of money or space for exercise equipment. Fortunately, these take up practically no space (they're easily stored in a closet or even a drawer) and are worth every penny. They look nice, provide a comfortable grip, and are perfectly adjustable.

My only complaint is that the plates clink around a bit when you move the dumbbells around; I've found that adding a bit of padding (a wedge of cloth, for instance) can cut down on this noise.

Customer Buzz
This is the perfect dumbbell set for home use . . . compact, flexible, easy to use.

My Fiancé bought me this set for Xmas and I absolutely love them. I live in a 1 bedroom condo and I was running out of room in my living room for all my dumbbells. I can already see me saving to get the next size up...which I'm sure I'll be needing before next year.

I have very small hands and the grips on these are just perfect to grasp them. Another thing I was worried about was placing them on my shoulders...they don't fit up there perfectly, but they don't fit up there uncomfortably either.

Another thing is they aren't incredibly cumbersome. When you get out of 20 pounders, the dumbbell ends become thick and big and hard for my little hands to grasp...not a problem with my powerblocks...Then ends are always easy to grasp and seem to stay the same size through the increments...which is perfect for my extra small hands.

I work out to Videos and have to pause the video in order to change the pin to a different weight, but it didn't take me long to get used to changing the pin into the correct increment and I'm getting faster with it all the time.

I've been slowly giving away my dumbbells because they just aren't needed anymore and I can't say enough about the powerblock...can't wait to buy my next set.

I'm thinking though that a stand would make changing increments easier...but for now...I'll make do.

I love the SportBlock. It is just the right size to do a variety of exercises and is relatively compact due to the square shape. These dumbbells are easy to manuever and the padded grips are comfortable. In my opinion, they are also the safest design of all the adjustable dumbbells and it is very easy to change weights.

The only issue with these blocks is that you have to be sure to insert the pin level and the pin assembly right side up. If you don't, while it is unlikely something will go wrong, it can. However, there is also an elastic safety mechanism just in case. This wouldn't help you in an overhead triceps press, but it's a very good design and a brief safety check before you do anything over your head will give you about as good a guarantee as you would get with any dumbbell used over the head.

Also, these things are rugged and the weight range is good for most people, especially if you use them along with a stability ball. A book that covers some workouts that is relatively inexpensive and well done is Weights on the Ball Workbook: Step-by-Step Guide with Over 350 Photos. If you handle heavier weights than this, then you may not want to work on a ball.

Also, eventually if you are serious about bodybuilding or putting on significant mass, you may want to upgrade to PowerBlock Personal Dumbbell Set or one of the similar products by the same manufacturer. Many people also like Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells, but I think PowerBlock is safer and a better value.
